NOTES ON THE SPECIFICATIONS & EDITIONS
The Signature, Autograph and 40th Anniversary
models were designed and built by the Fender USA Custom Shop to
Hank Marvins specifications and particular requirements at
the time; they were commissioned and endorsed by Fender
UK and sold through their distributor Arbiter.
The Shadows 50th Anniversary model is, as near as is prac-
ticable, an exact reproduction of the Fender Stratocaster Se-
rial Number 34346, imported into the UK by Cliff Richard in
1959 and used by Hank Marvin on The Shadows early hit
singles. The edition was planned, commissioned and sold ex-
clusively by the independent Fender UK dealer Oasis Musical
Instruments. The original guitar was loaned to the commis-
sioning dealer, it was examined in detail, and measurements
and photographs were taken in order to replicate it as accu-
rately as possible. The entire edition was Masterbuilt by Greg
Fessler as a Dealer Select issue.
Edition Numbering Systems
The numbering systems of the
Signature, Autograph and 40th Anniversary
models take no account of additional in-
struments built for Hank Marvin and others.
However, in the case of the
Shadows 50th Anniversary
model, 54 units were manufactured of which only 50 were issued for retail.
Fender USA regard the
Signature and Autograph models as
a single edition of 200 instruments despite the obvious, but
minor, differences in their specifications. It is reported that
when launched in 1992 the Signature was originally intended
to be an edition of 100 instruments, but in 1995 the run was
then extended with modifications to become the
All guitars sampled with a serial number up to and including
100 appear to have the
specification, all from 101
onwards have the
Autograph specification. Records suggest,
however, that the combined number of units of both models
manufactured and sold amounted to only 164 in total before
edition was finally discontinued
in 1998, probably in anticipation of the arrival of the
40th Anniversary model.
Although Fender catalogue the colour of the
Signature, Autograph and 40th Anniverary
models as 942 Vintage Fiesta Red, none of the guitars sampled actually matched the
Fiesta Red used by them on their stock model issues. When
seen side by side, the Signature model is probably closest to
standard Fiesta Red, the Autographis slightly lighter and
pinker in colour whilst the 40th Anniversary
has quite a strong pink hue and is yet lighter again.
The Shadows 50th Anniversary
is noticeably darker in colour than the other three models; the shade of red is cooler
with definite pink tones when viewed in a bright light. Fender
have designated the colour as 985 - Custom Red, and it is
based largely on the recollections of Hank Marvin and Bruce
Welch of the original colour of Stratocaster 34346 when it was
received back in 1959.
Neck Specifications and Variations
As with colour, although the neck specification for all models
is described by Fender as Nicely Figured, there were clear
differences in the patterning of the necks on the guitars sam-
pled. In ascending order of the degree of patterning the
Signature model neck probably ranks lowest of the four, fol-
lowed by the Autograph the 40th Anniversary and Shadows 50th Anniversary
were the most highly figured. In the case of the Shadows 50th Anniversary
each piece has also been carefully selected to replicate as near as possible the
colour and patterning exhibited on Stratocaster 34346.
The necks fitted to the Autograph
and 40th Anniversary tend to be much paler in colour than those of the
Signature and Shadows 50th Anniversary
models. The coating on
the necks of the Signature
Autograph and 40th Anniversary
models is thin layer nitrocellulose, which gives a matt
finish. The neck of the Shadows 50th Anniversary model
has a beautiful deep honey-coloured finish, due in part to its
tinted gloss nitrocellulose coating.
The fret marker LEDs on the
40th Anniversary instruments were retro-fitted in the UK.
They are powered by a 9v battery
which resides in the routed area beneath the back-plate and
they are controlled by the push-pull mechanism of Control
Switch Number 2.
A big Thanks to Ian Evans for the very detailed spec of all the Hank Guitars. A labour of love.
